How to Select a Polyethylene Chemical Storage Tank Based on Shape

By Tanks No Comments

When choosing a polyethylene chemical storage tank, there are several key factors to consider; the application, desired capacity, purpose (mixing or storing), double-wall or single-wall, and where it will be located, just to name a few. But there is another consideration in purchasing a tank that might not get the full deliberation it deserves; Its shape.

The different tank shapes are generally rectangle/square, cylindrical and conical, and all offer some pros and cons depending upon your application. Peabody Engineering’s Gemini Dual Containment® tanks are available in both square and cylindrical shapes.

Below are some general guidelines in selecting the right tank for your application.

Cylindrical tanks are the most commonly used tanks in a wide variety of industries including agricultural, water storage, chemical, and water treatment applications.

  • Cost-effective choice for bulk storage.
  • Excellent hoop strength with no stress points.

  • More difficult to install fittings and piping manifolds due to the curved sidewall
  • More wasted space in an environment with corners.

Square or Rectangular

Square or rectangular tanks are more popular in some applications than cylindrical tanks but can be used in an array of industries and applications that one may not consider at first glance.

  • Allows for maximum use of space with a compact footprint as compared to cylindrical tanks.
  • Flat sides allow for ease in plumbing and piping design.
  • Less expensive to ship and transport than cylindrical tanks.

  • Increased sidewall head pressure from the liquid being stored on large flat surfaces.
  • Limited size range available.
  • Generally more costly than cylindrical tanks.

Peabody Cone BottomCone bottom

Cone bottom tanks are well-suited in applications where 100% drainage of the tank is necessary like the food, cosmetics, or pharmaceutical industries.

  • Easier to drain and clean between batches.
  • Reduces sediment collection at the bottom.
  • Ideal for mixing applications.

  • Requires a stand and hardware.
  • More costly than other tank configurations.
  • Reduced volume per cubic foot due to cone configuration.

All three styles of tanks have their advantages, the choice you make all depends upon your specific application, and what your budget for the project will be.

Our ProChem® tanks offer all three styles in single wall configurations.

Our Gemini Dual Containment® cylindrical tanks range in sizes from 15 gallons to 500 gallons.

Our Gemini Dual Containment® square tanks are available in sizes 5 gallons to 175 gallons and allow for a larger capacity in limited spaces — 22% more capacity than cylindrical tanks of the same size.

By General

Christmas 2020 – We Hope You Enjoy This Years Christmas Letter.

Our office will be closed on Dec 24th, 25th, 30th and 31st, 2020

Tis the Season! The season for reflecting upon the past year, setting goals for the year ahead and making resolutions for positive changes in our lives to improve. This year is like no other. Lots of unprecedented events and many new challenges that we have all been forced to adjust to. My dad always told me that adversity builds character, growth and makes you stronger. I can say without reservation that we all should have a much better character and be much stronger after what we have been through this year.

We can commiserate about how bad things were or we can search for lessons in our experiences and build upon those lessons to make our future better. I’ve never been one to dwell on the past or worry about tomorrow. I’ve always focused on what I can do today, now, to make the future better, try not to make the same mistakes and focus on being the best “Me” that I can be.

So, after reflecting upon the year behind us, we must ask what we want to achieve in the year ahead. Please read the full Peabody Engineering Christmas newsletter by clicking here. It is in PDF format (1.8mb)

Thanksgiving 2020 – A Perspective

By General

Happy Thanksgiving 2020Thanksgiving 2020 – We Hope You Enjoy This Years Thanksgiving Letter.

Our office will be closed on Nov 26th and 27th, 2020.

2020 has been an unprecedented year to put it mildly. Everything started out okay, but things quickly went south, starting with Impeachment proceedings against our President at the same time we first heard about a novel coronavirus coming from China. Things quickly got worse from there. We all know about the nightmare we’ve endured these past 8 months, with lockdowns, fear mongering and a radical change in the way we live our lives. To top it all off, we have a contested Presidential election with an outcome that is anyone’s guess. How far we have fallen!

Our Great Nation and the whole world are in peril, but we as Americans are up to the task of getting things back on track. If America’s good people stand up and speak up for righteousness and Goodness, we will prevail.

Patriotism is NOT Dead – Happy Fourth of July 2020

By General

Patriotism is NOT DeadOur office will be closed on Friday July 3rd, 2020. We will resume normal business hours on Monday, July 6, 2020.

We made it. It’s here. Independence Day 2020. 244 years ago today, on July 4th, 1776, a handful of brave men and women, some well-educated, all successful and responsible, who loved their fellow man, who forged out a new nation from the harsh wilderness, braving great peril and even death from the harsh environment, from extreme weather, wild animals, threats of peril from bellicose bands of violent savages and outlaws, pestilence and disease!

They could deal with all those threats and they did so successfully. What they would not tolerate was oppression from a far-away ruling authority named George III, who was the King of England and felt that the citizens of the New World were his subjects and toiled for and at his pleasure.

Happy 4th of July! The leaders of the Colonists had had enough and listed the Grievances they had against the crown that despite their complaints, had failed to be addressed. King George’s rule of the Colonies included occupation by an oppressive and draconian standing military force (The Regulars), who routinely broke into private homes and took whatever they wanted in the name of the crown. The King also ordered that trade be cut off to the Colonies, barred citizens from a fair and speedy trial, imposed unfair taxes without representation and 23 more grievances enumerated in a document that defined America and established it as a free and sovereign nation called the Declaration of Independence, which ushered in the Revolutionary War.
